Dealing with AML, (acute myeloid
leukemia) where do I begin.
One day you feel like you are at the top
of a mountain and the next your life is
reduced to dust lying at the foot of
that mountain. It is so amazing how
things can change in such a short period
of time. On Sunday, October 2, 2011 we
spent the day helping our Grandson
celebrate his first birthday. Monday I
went to the ER, got 3 units of whole
blood and then on Tuesday I was told
that I have AML. All I could think was
that this cannot be true.
I
left Meritus Medical Center on
Wednesday, October 5th for the
University Of Maryland Medical
Center. I was able to come home on
Monday, November 14th. 40 days at UMMC
and 3 days at Meritus, believe me when I
say that there is no place like home.
The 40 days at UMMC included a 7 day 24
hour per day stretch of chemo or 168
straight hours of a constant chemo
drip. I also spent 3 days in ICU because
of a fever and difficulty breathing.
Have had two PICC lines put in my arms
and have had both taken out because of
blood clots. The second one is bad
enough that I am on blood thinners to
help break it up, for that I get to give
myself a shot once a day. All isn't so
bad, though. I have been home
since very late November 14th and I will
go back to UMMC on Monday, December 19th
for a 5 day session of chemo. With any
luck I will be home for Christmas and
New Year’s, except they will be spent
with just myself and Viv, my wife.
Thank God for insurance. We just
received papers from UMMC which say,
This is not a bill. We are waiting
to see how much the insurance will pay
of the $241,143.85 for the initial
treatment of the chemo. These figures do
not include any of the Doctor's fees,
prescription medications, gas or wear
and tear on the car for 40 days of
traveling to and from Baltimore.
I
know that We have a long road ahead of
us, more chemo, a bone marrow
transplant, and whatever else comes
along. But by the grace of God, the love
and support, the prayers of our family
and friends (old and new) we will get
through this.
My Sincerest Thank You,
Thomas E. Suffecool
