Rachel Dombroski Story -
On the night of November 25th, 2006
Rachel was involved in an automobile
accident. Rachel was removed from
the car with a scratch on her eye, a
cut on her knuckle, and diffuse
axonal injury—one of the most
devastating types of traumatic brain
injury. Four years later, despite
much hard work and improvement,
Rachel is unable to walk, speak, or
care for herself.
At 14 years old, Rachel Dombroski
attracted attention wherever she
went. With her bright eyes, loud
voice, and magnetic personality,
people who met her were instantly
drawn to her. Rachel enjoyed her
many friendships and being the
center of attention, Rachel always
loved horses and started riding at
age three. At 14, Rachel enjoyed
being a teenager and all of the
privileges that came along with it.
Now 18, Rachel still commands
people’s attention with her bright
eyes and big smile, however, the
first thing they notice is her
wheelchair. Instead of hearing her
loud voice, they hear her Mother’s
voice speaking for her. Rachel has
not ridden for four years, her close
friendships have faded away because
today Rachel can’t ride a horse,
call a friend, or even speak to you.
Today, Rachel’s days start at 5am so
that she can begin the 45-minute
process of eating via a feeding
tube. She relies on her mother and
sister to help her through her
morning routine and provide her with
transportation to school, doctor’s
appointments, and any activities.
Any trip requires the use of their
handicapped equipped van, which is
consistently in need of repairs. A
new van is a necessity at this point
in order to get Rachel to and from
school and appointments. It is her
mother’s hope that a new van and
improved accessibility will allow
Rachel to enjoy the same quality of
life as her peers without special
needs.
