Lily is a fun-loving, free spirited,
happy ten year old girl. She has an
older sister, Gracie and a younger
brother, Frankie. Lily loves going to
school and has an infectious
personality. She loves life and dancing
in every moment. Lily loves being with
her friends, dancing, shopping, is
extremely creative, loves giggling,
going to the beach, and being with her
family. Her nickname is Birdie as she is
such a petite little girl with an
unforgettable character.
She
has danced the past five years with
MMPAC. However, this summer when she was
at the beach, Lily was tumbling and
loving every minute of it! When asked if
she would like to try cheerleading for a
year she jumped at the chance!
Competitive cheerleading…here we come!
Lily began to complain of some arm pain
in mid July. It was an infrequent and
random complaint. We thought it was how
she was sleeping or because of the new
time that she spent at the gym tumbling.
However, on July 29, Lily complained so
much that I made a call to Dr. Copaken
to get an appointment. By August 3, I
told my husband that I was going to
cancel the appointment because she
hadn’t complained about arm pain and
Lily was in the gym for about 6-8 hours
a week that week. We decided to keep the
appointment. On August 4, Lily woke up
in the middle of the night with severe
arm pain but we once attributed it to
the time in the gym and were relieved we
didn’t cancel the appointment. On August
5, our world changed forever. I thought
I was taking Lily in for possible
cortisone shot when Dr. Copaken told me
she found a mass on Lily’s arm and we
needed a STAT MRI. My heart fell and it
was hard to focus. By the end of the day
on Friday, we were fairly certain Lily
had some type of bone cancer. The
following week would hold a biopsy which
would confirm the type of cancer. By
Tuesday of the following week, we knew
Lily had Ewing’s Sarcoma. This is an
extremely rare bone cancer. After a lung
biopsy, we also were told that Lily had
some nodules of Ewing’s in her lungs as
well. Lily is one of 50 children who
will get diagnosed with this cancer this
year. We have begun a very aggressive
chemotherapy and will have a few more
surgeries in our future as well and then
more chemotherapy and some radiation.
Through all of this, Lily has not once
given up and knows she has the fight of
her life. She is ready and we are too.
Lily has and will always twinkle. |
