Karen Near loves life.
Karen Near’s life is family. And if you
know her, you are family. From a very
early age, her welcoming smile and
outward joy have drawn others to her.
Anyone who knows her knows that she
looks to make each day a celebration.
She takes joy in nature and in camping.
She draws inspiration from the mountains
of the desert Southwest. But she doesn’t
need to travel to celebrate life. If you
drop by just to chat (as many do),
within the hour you may end up in the
middle of an impromptu party.
If you are troubled, she listens without
judging, and the words she offers are
consistently uplifting. Her “can-do”
attitude is infectious. Putting others
before her is who Karen is. She will
drop whatever she is doing to come to
the aid of a friend in need. She is one
of the most encouraging people you’ll
ever meet. If you feel defeated, she
lifts your spirits, points out your
strengths, and helps you shift your
perspective.
First diagnosed with breast cancer in
2006, Karen was unwavering in her
determination to beat the cancer and
live her life to the fullest. She went
through extensive chemotherapy and then
through a double mastectomy, keeping a
positive attitude through even her most
painful days. She won this initial
battle and was scheduled to undergo
reconstructive surgery in the winter of
2010. In late August of 2009, it was
discovered that the cancer had
metastasized to the bones of the hip,
heel, spine and to a significant segment
of her left knee and femur. She now must
undergo chemotherapy indefinitely, as
well as eventual knee replacement
surgery.
Now, her family and friends want to
support Karen, her husband Mark and
their beautiful daughter, Andrea. As
Karen has always been for those around
her, we are determined to be by her side
through the battle. Life is joy to
Karen. Karen is joy to us. Please help
us support her.
